A Message from the Principal

Mr. Ricardo Rodriguez

Killian Cougars,

It is with great pride and pleasure that I welcome all Miami Killian Senior High School students to the 2007-2008 school year!

A special welcome back to the class of 2008, our seniors, who will provide leadership to our underclassmen. Your leadership will be the foundation of our success as a school; “Killian succeeds because the Cougars lead.”

This year, we take pride in welcoming our incoming freshmen, the class of 2011. You are the leaders of tomorrow! Now that you are in high school, much will be expected of you. I urge you to become actively involved in school by becoming a member of the various interest clubs and school organizations. You are also encouraged to try-out for one of our many sports. We offer a myriad of opportunities for students to become involved in school. Feel free to visit our Activities Office and our Athletic Director before school, to find out more!

We look forward to a year full of challenges and rewards for all of us. You will be challenged to put forth your maximum effort and you will be rewarded for your hard work with an outstanding educational experience.

Our school vision is to provide an educational environment in which students can “Aspire and Act to Achieve.” Through this vision, we recognize that it is not enough to desire to, or imagine changes. We must make proactive plans and take the necessary steps to achieve goals, and make dreams a reality.

As most of you have seen, our school building is undergoing a major renovation. There is still much work to be done. The key word this year is patience; we will all have to be patient with the minor inconveniences brought upon by our renovation project.

There are areas of our building that are off limits to students due to safety concerns; students will need to adhere to the signage posted throughout the school building.

This year, as in the past, students will be required to pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test to meet high school graduation requirements. Students, who score at FCAT Reading Levels 1 or 2, will be placed in an Intensive Reading Class, as mandated by our school district. This is the second year of the eleventh grade science portion of the FCAT. All eleventh graders will be required to take a science class in preparation for the Science FCAT. Any eleventh grader that does not pass the science portion of the FCAT will be scheduled into a remedial science class in their senior year.

We are proud of Miami Killian’s Administrative Staff; they are a vital part of our faculty. Our Assistant Principal for curriculum is Dr. Shirley Hill. Administrative Assistant Principals who handle school operations are Mr. Ciro Hidalgo, Mrs. Leonor Ravelo, and Mr. Jimmy Wetherspoon. Additionally, Mr. Herbert Koross, retired principal of Arvida Middle School, is part of our administrative team.

The entire Miami Killian Senior High School faculty stands ready to make certain that you have the most opportunities to succeed during your high school career.

Have that Cougar Day!
